Examples of needle binding.Examples of needle binding.Needlebinding (Nålbindning) is a technique that is thousands of years old. It was used for making textiles with needle and thread. Long before the invention of knitting and crochet, people used needle binding to make socks, hats and gloves. During the workshop we look at (pre) historical and ethnographic examples of needle binding and then we get to work with the basic stitch and a number of variations.

A different, and slightly more advanced, method of needlebinding is done over the thumb. This method will have its own workshop on the 9th of December.

Participants do not need to bring anything except patience. If you have a binding needle yourself, you can of course bring it with you.

This Wednesday morning workshop is given by Dorothee Olthof, an expert in the field of archaeological textiles and in the reconstruction of medieval and later clothing.
