Example of Shetland lace.Shetland lace knitting
The Shetland Islands in the far north of the United Kingdom are famous for their lace knitting. Although the results look complicated, the underlying patterns are relatively simple. This workshop will give some historic background on Shetland lace and will offer you a first experience of reading pattern charts and knitting lace patterns.
Everyone is welcome, but you need to be able to do basic knitting (knit and purl stitches). Materials will be supplied, but if you like your own knitting needles you can bring them along (size 4mm).
The workshop is given by Alice van Duijnen, who is experienced in many textile techniques ever since she learned knitting at the age of 6. She has taught knitting, crochet and weaving. As volunteer at the TRC she works on the technique oriented Reference Collection.
