The sari is an iconic garment worn for centuries by Indian women. There are many different types of sari, reflecting social, economic, religious and artistic backgrounds. This exhibition looks at some of the different ways that saris have been decorated to create a wide variety of colourful, and at times stunning, effects.

  • Contents: The exhibition includes c. 50 saris, which are divided into (a) printed and painted, (b) woven, and (c) embroidered examples. In addition, there are various photographs and a text that explains the various forms and the techniques to create the saris. This exhibition can be accompanied by a booklet explaining the techniques on display (in English).
  • Availability: This exhibition is on display in the National Museum of Ethnology, Leiden, The Netherlands, from March 2010 until October 2010. It will then be available for loan.
